By: Cong Khanh

The four precious trees; Banyan, Fig, Pine and Loc Vung has long symbolized prosperity and fortune. Especially, the ancient Loc Vung trees on the banks of Hoan Kiem Lake that blossom twice a year (at the beginning of summer and at the end of autumn), turning the area around the heart of Hanoi into a sea of red.

Normally Loc Vung blossoms bloom at night and fall early the next morning creating a fascinating lush carpet. The petals are floating on the blue water making Hoan Kiem Lake even more charming which inspires many poets and photographers. As the season changes the leaves suddenly turn yellow. According to some elders, the legendary tortoise will surface whenever the Loc Vung trees blossom. This adds to the fame of Hoan Kiem Lake.
