THE AODAI “Hoi Trung Duong” – WAY BACK TO THE ANCESTRAL LAND

 In 2007 the ‘Hoi trung duong’ aodai project, by designer Vo Viet Chung, was anticipated to be completed within 6 months, but it is only two years later that the final seams of the huge aodai were finished, only three months before the big Millennium Thang Long Hanoi festival celebrations – the final stop of trungduong as expected.
  - Designer Vo Viet Chung: “I actually finished the aodai at the end of last year, but I’m a perfectionist and I want to make it as close to perfect as possible. For example, I changed the color of its laps and some needlework, I also changed the gems becaI thought they weren’t suitable. It is my wish to have my own masterpiece after working in the fashion business for 20 years.”
  + TravelliveBecaof its great stature and significant meaning, it is now not your own, even though you are the designer, the manager and the investigator of this longtime cultural project. It will be shown in public and will stay in their hearts. Lets take a look at it’s appearance and compare it to how it looked at the start.
- When the aodai ‘Hoi trung duong’ appears in public, they will realize that it is a harmonious combination of three features: embroidered skill, high-faluting art (such as our traditional calligraphy) and the skill of plaiting gems in the modern age.  As a difference from the primary outline, I invited the Chinese calligrapher, Truong Han Minh to write some old Vietnamese proverbs on the aodai. Handwriting characters are refined as if it hides behind clouds and flying dragons. ‘Hoi trung duong’ is a special story of national history and culture. We can see the image of Vietnamese women in the art of flower embroidering and brocading that passes on tradition from one generation to another. It holds the spirit of the nation.
 + Have you contacted Vietbooks to find out if you have a chance to record the aodai ‘Hoi trung duong’ into Vietnamese Guinness?
 - They actually contacted me! Vietbooks are completing my profile to up a record for ‘Hoi trung duong’. According to our commitment, related information to this record is to be kept secret until the night before theaodai is revealed in Saigon were it was made. It is anticipated to take place on September 23rd,, this is when Vietbooks will give me their decision whether or not my work will be recognized.
 
+In 2008 the ‘Hoi trung duong’ project attracted much local and international attention, like Travellive and KBS, a Korean based channel. In the period of its completion has there been any opportunity for the public to see it?
  The answer is not yet. At the end of last year, during some Vietnamese cultural weeks abroad, they asked me to introduce it but I decided against it. I want my work to appear at the right place and occasion, this was my plan since I decided to create it.
  + You have been given an insignia as well as a congratulatory certificate “the designer has the credit of recovering and developing My A satin material” by UNESCO in 2006.  At your collection in Milan ‘Ms Ba from Vietnam’ the international fashion circles had the chance to view and admire this Southern traditional material. y. Is it the reason why you choose this material for the aodai ‘Hoi trung duong’, the manifestation of respect for ancient values on the decline?
  - That’s right, but it is not enough. Indeed, few international fashion circles are familiar with Vietnamese fashion. Not only myself, but also, other Vietnamese designers will be able to take advantage of our valuable chance to popularize the image of Vietnam, with UNESCO recognizing us as well as the exposure received by international fashion shows and Fashion TV.  In this piece of ‘Hoi trung duong’, My A satin material of Tan Chau silk is used mainly for panels. I would like people to look and revere it as a cultural relic, something restored after a long sleep. In addition, many other traditional kinds of silk such as Ha Dong silk, Van Phuc silk from the North, Lam Dong and Da Nang silk from the Centre are displayed in 9 laps and sleeves. ‘Hoi trung duong’ is the blend of traditional and modern silk such as Phong Phu, Phuoc Thinh.
  
 + The aodai ‘Hoi trung duong’ is going to make its debut in October on the Millennium Thang Long Hanoi celebrations. How do expect you will feel when showing your masterpiece to the public in such a special festival?
  - The show of ‘Hoi trung duong’ in Hanoi in such a spiritual time of history surely brings about unusual feelings for not only me but for everyone. Even though I’m from the South, there is no distinction between me and Hanoians. We are all children of the Fairy and the Dragon. ‘Hoi trung duong’ is my private work, on which I spent a lot of time. I’ll be very happy to see my “child” return to where the idea was formed.
In all honesty I might be the owner but there are 50 other artists and craftsmen that have contributed to the creation of this aodai.  When you see the aodai, you should not only see the work of the famous Vo Viet Chung but also of those who contributed, encouraged and supported me financially.
 + Is there any connection between your masterpiece and the Millennium Thang Long – Hanoi?
 - I was taking part in a wedding fashion show organized by Travlelive in Hanoi last year, while traveling to Hanoi I read an excellent piece by Huynh Van Nghe.  It read, “Who travels to the North/Visiting Lac Hong home country/Since enlarging the country by swords/Vietnam mourned over Thang Long”. This had an emotional affect on me and urged me to return to the birthplace of our nation. One could also find a connection in the 1000 year Thang Long and the 1000-meter-long aodai, with its 9 laps and flying dragon decorations. I think there is a link between the present and the past.
 + You have traveled to many countries all over the world.  What impresses you most about Hanoi?
 -Hanoi is the cradle of the national culture. I’m impressed by the many ancient cultural values. At first, it felt strange but now it’s different.  You’ll notice that I will spending a lot more time in Hanoi than in Ho Chi Minh City.  At the end of last year, I opened a showroom in Hanoi. Now when I travel to Hanoi it should be said that I’m coming back rather than I’m visiting.

Flying dragon on Thang Long homeland
The aodai ‘Hoi trung duong’ is the blend of cultures from three different regions. It tells stories about the many upheavals in national history. People see Thang Long through the image of a flying dragon, Cuu Long river through the image of the dragon in the water and the old citadel through the vignette of a dragon in the Nguyen dynasty. The most special feature of this work is the image of flying dragon on 9 laps. The‘Hoi trung duong’ has 9 dragon tails of 1000 meter long, as same as 1000 years of Thang Long – Hanoi. It took 3 and a half years to complete (2007 to July of 2010)

Do Son – the land to try your luck

Do Son is endowed with a lot of tourist attractions and the breathtaking beauty of nature. Located 22km away from Hai Phong city, Do Son is the only place to have opened a casino in Vietnam. It is believed to be an ideal place to try your luck.

Historian Prof. Le Van Lan
 
Pennames: Van Lan, An Cuong, An Ly


Historian Le Van Lan has spent more than half a century (52 years) studying the History and Culture of Vietnam. He is also the author of 20 books, 150 science research reports and 500 articles on history for children.

He says “I am the last generation of the traditional history class. I pursue my passion and not my profession no matter what the challenges. Now we are entering a new era where a profession has many requirements, however it’s important to remember that passion requires nothing – it comes naturally”
Prof Le Van Lan has cooperated with Travellive on historical and cultural items written about Vietnam. He is currently living and working in Hanoi 


Researcher & Photographer Nguyen Van Ku

Nguyen Van Ku worked for many years at the Institute of Archaeology and the International Cooperation Department

He is a member of the Vietnam Association of Art Photographers and the Federation of International Art Photographers (FIAP). He has co-authored the following books: Cham Sculpture, Buddhist Temples inVietnam, Dinh – Communal Hall in Vietnam, the Sedang of Vietnam, and Funeral houses in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Some of his books have won prestigious awards.

In 2006 Nguyen Van Ku organised a photo exhibition with his son, Nguyen Thanh Liem, entitled “The Vietnamese communal ho- diversification”. The exhibition was held at the Museum of Ethnology in Hanoi.
Nguyen Van Ku has cooperated with Travellive since its first days as a magazine, helping with the photography of many different fields including culture, history, and archaeology.  He will publish the third edition of the Vietnamese book “Buddhist Temples in Vietnam”, in the near future.




Dao Tien Dat

Dao Tien Dat has cooperated with Travellive in the realm of photography since 2007. With 11 years of experience in photography, he has won 170 valuable prizes, including 135 international prizes and 35 national prizes such as VIPC 2005- Photographer of the Year in Italy, the Gold Medal for the Best of Asia title in Italy in 2006, Best Cup YMCA in Hongkong in 2006, and 15 gold medals in such countries as America, Italy, Austria, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Poland, India.


For four consecutive years, from 2004 to 2007, photographer Dao Tien Dat was on the Photographic Society of America’s list of the world’s top ten excellent photographers in the genre of black-and-white photos. He was also granted the Dao Tan award by the Centre for the Study, Preservation and Development of Vietnam’s Cultural Values in 2008.

“Photographing allows me to share a message and to ask questions of myself, as well as communicate with others” says Dat, “It’s more than simply aesthetics”.  He is now living and working in Quy Nhon, Binh Dinh.


Nguyen Huyen
 
Pen-name: Lucia Nguyen

Nguyen Huyen has worked as a journalist since 2003 and has cooperated with Travellive magazine since 2007.

Nguyen Huyen has written about a lot of interesting and untouched destinations in the Mekong River Delta, where she now lives, and has shared these stories with Travellive readers.


Huynh Quoc Hai
 
Pen-names: Quoc Hai, Huynh Phan
Huynh Quoc Hai has worked as a journalist for 12 years and has cooperated with Travellive magazine since 2007. He often writes about culture, food and attractions in Hoi An.
“I am really happy to see my writing and photos beautifully featured in Travellive magazine. I also find that the editing process at Travellive magazine is done in a professional way. It shows a respect to its readers and customers. He is now working at Hoi An Radio Station.


Pham Tan Duc
 
Pen-name: Tan Duc


Pham Tan Duc works as a tour guide. He began writing in 2005. He has cooperated with Travellive since its first days, and has contributed interesting and emotional articles about fascinating locations in theMekong River delta area. He has also written about landscapes in Asia.

“Travelling helps me understand more about new lands - its people and cultural characteristics, and I can then share my feelings and discoveries with Travellive readers”, he says.  He is now living and working inHo Chi Minh City.



Dinh Thanh Tung

Dinh Thanh Tung is affectionately called “cangiozz” by his friends. He has had a passion for photography since he was a child, and enjoys capturing all kinds of compositions from insects and grass, to portraits and models.

Tung says “I am instantly enchanted by the beauty of nature and can do nothing but try to capture it. Taking architectural photos is also interesting. Today thanks to advanced technology, 360x180 panoramic pictures are available. This technology has also brought advantages for the realm of tourism photography such as architectural pictures of hotels or resorts.” He is now living and working in Ho Chi Minh City.


Phan Quoc Vinh
 
Pen-names: Ha Linh, Vinh Phan

Phan Quoc Vinh has 15 years of experience contributing articles and photos for a number of newspapers and magazines. He also provides Travellive magazine with interesting articles in such sections as Discovery, Domestic Travel and International Travel. He tells us that “each article is one of my footprints.” He was awarded “the most excellent writer in tourism” by Heritage magazine in 2007. Phan Quoc Vinh has cooperated with Travellive since 2007. He is now living and working in Hue city.

Dang Quoc Anh
 
Pen-name: Piero

Dang Quoc Anh often provides Travellive with pictures after his trips. He says “I like wandering around and capturing on camera the daily lives of those I meet.” He shares that “For me, photography is like a merticulous game. Though it is a game, the photographer must have dedication and determination in their thoughts and actions when taking a picture.”  
He is now a director of Kanfa Design Company and has cooperated with Travellive since 2008.


Dinh Cong Hoan
Dinh Cong Hoan doesn’t a pen name, and has more than 25 years of experience in photography. He provides Travellive with numerous pictures of culture and landscapes. He says “Photography brings me two things – that it is too late to be born, and too early to die”

Nguyen Viet Hung
 
Pen-names: Lekima, Hung Nguyen, Viet Hung

With five years of experience in photography, Nguyen Viet Hung is now an administrator of a photo forum in Vietnam. He says that “to capture beautiful pictures, one has to not only see with his eyes but also with his soul. Travelling is a way to make new experiences familiar, and vice versa. For me, the next picture will be more beautiful than the previous ones. This teaches me how to be patient and nurtue my passion”.

Viet Hung has cooperated with Travellive magazine since 2009. He lives and works in Hanoi.


Ho Hoang Quy

Ho Hoang Quy was born in Dalat. He has a great passion for photography. He specialises in capturing landscapes of Dalat. He has been one of Travellive’s contributors since the magazine’s first days. “I very much like reading Travellive and admiring all the contributions,” he shares. He has worked as a photographer for nearly ten years. He sometimes enters photo contests and has won some well-recognised prizes.

Nationality: USA

Dale Gerstenslager is a Communications Manager for Doosan Heavy Industries Vietnam in Quang Ngai. He also cooperates with Language Link Vietnam to edit articles in English for Travellive magazine. The country and the Vietnamese people have made a deep impression on him. “The people of Vietnam have the best spirit of any group of people I’ve ever met, the country has its share of problems, but I really believe in the long run they will come out on top,” he says. Talking about his current work, he adds “Working in the media has given me many opportunies that I don’t believe I would have had otherwise. I’ve been able to travel a bit and I’ve met many interesting people, some of these I can’t forget becathey were so special.”  


Lindy Nelson Parker
 
Nationality: New Zealand

Lindy was born in New Zealand and has spent the last ten years travelling and working abroad. After obtaining her BA in MelbourneAustralia, she moved to Vietnam where she has lived and worked for the last year. She says “Vietnam was only supposed to be a two month stopover on my travels, but the warmth of the people and the vibrancy of the culture made it so that I couldn’t leave. There is so much more to learn about this land”.
Along with her editing work at Voice of Vietnam radio and Travellive magazine, she works as an English teacher for Language Link Vietnam. Lindy is currently living and working in Hanoi.
